A clinical psychologist came to The Book Marketing Source with a trauma psychology book written for general readers. The expertise was deep and the manuscript was strong, but a trade book aimed at everyday readers requires something a clinical career does not build: an author platform. At the start of the engagement, that platform did not exist. There was no email list, no professional social presence, and no infrastructure to carry the book to the readers it was written for. We began at the manuscript stage, before the book was in the market.
Clinical credibility does not transfer to reader visibility on its own. An author can be respected in the field and invisible to the audience the book was written for. The gap was not the content or the credentials. It was the absence of every channel that connects a book to its readers, and the absence of the companion materials that turn a book’s ideas into something a reader can act on. The book needed a platform built around it and assets built alongside it, in the right sequence, before and through launch.
We started at the foundation. Working from the manuscript, we selected and optimized the title, defined the target audience the book should reach, and built the marketing plan that guided every decision after. We set the pricing for both the print and eBook editions, then optimized the Amazon profile and built the Amazon A+ content so the product page itself established credibility. We created the author’s Amazon and Goodreads profiles to give the book a professional home on the platforms readers use to decide.
The book also needed to become something a reader could use, not just read. We developed a set of companion materials that extended its framework into practice: a worksheet, a journal, and a practitioner guide. These were not filler. Each one gave a different kind of reader a reason to engage further and a natural step toward the author’s work.
With the foundation and the assets in place, we built the audience. We created an email list from zero and grew it with a segmented email campaign built to nurture different kinds of subscribers rather than send everyone the same message. We ran Amazon and Facebook advertising to put the book in front of the readers it was written for, and we ran a blog tour and a podcast campaign to extend its reach. We produced ongoing content across LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram to keep the author visible between larger moments. Throughout, we gathered testimonials that strengthened the book’s credibility and the author’s authority.
We built a webinar around the book’s framework, with the funnel behind it to convert attention into a relationship. What made the scope possible was the author’s posture. Openness is a choice an author makes every time something new is proposed, and most stop making it once the work gets uncomfortable. This author kept making it, and the breadth of what we built together reflects that.
The book reached #1 New Release in Trauma Psychology on Amazon. The email list grew from zero to more than 500 subscribers and is still growing. The author has appeared on more than 30 podcasts and built a LinkedIn following from zero to more than 500. Each result fed the next. The ranking strengthened the podcast pitches, the advertising and appearances drove the audience, and the platform now sustains the visibility the launch created. The author started with no platform and ends with a full one, built from the manuscript forward.
Results vary based on existing platform, package selected, and implementation timeline.
