writings on the side of a book

Creating a powerful author brand is paramount for success in the literary world. Remember that your author brand goes beyond just selling books. Your brand will forge a lasting connection with your readers and give you a distinct identity as an author.

Here are 6 steps to help published authors elevate their author brand.

1. Define Your Brand Essence

Your brand essence is the core identity that sets you apart.

Ask yourself: What values and themes define your writing? Is it suspenseful storytelling, empowering narratives, or thought-provoking content? J.K. Rowling, for instance, is synonymous with magic, courage, and the triumph of good over evil. Identify your unique selling proposition and build your brand around it.

2. Consistent Author Platform

Establish a consistent online presence across various platforms.

Your website, social media profiles, and promotional materials should all reflect a cohesive visual identity. This visual identity includes your color palette, the fonts in your blogs or emails, and pictures or graphics. As a result, your author brand becomes easy to recognize online. I discussed this topic in greater detail here.

3. Engage with Your Audience

Successful author brands involve their readers.

Create a buyer persona to connect with your readers through social media, blog comments, or email newsletters. Share snippets of your writing process and behind-the-scenes glimpses and respond to reader comments. Building a community of readers around your brand can promote loyalty and word-of-mouth marketing.

4. Content Marketing Strategies

Leverage content marketing to reinforce your brand.

Write blog posts, create videos, or host podcasts that align with your brand values. For example, if your brand is about empowering women, create content that reflects and supports this mission. Use Margaret Atwood’s active engagement in feminist discussions as inspiration.

5. Create a Signature Style

Develop a signature style that extends beyond your writing.

Your signature style could include:

  • A unique author photo.
  • A specific way of interacting on social media.
  • Even a memorable catchphrase.
  • An email signature that includes a copy of your book cover.

Your signature style should consistently resonate with your target audience across all touchpoints.

6. Collaborate and Network

Collaborate with influencers, fellow authors, or industry experts to expand your reach.

Participate in events, podcasts, or joint ventures that align with your brand. Consider how Stephen King and Peter Straub collaborated on “The Talisman.” Such collaborations introduce you to new audiences and strengthen your credibility within the literary community. All of these can increase book sales.

Building a strong author brand takes time, consistency, and requires dedication. By following these 6 steps, you will be on your way to owning a powerful and memorable author brand.
