Book Review

Angela Kecojevic writes an intriguing tale in Scareground. Set in Victorian-era Greenwich, London, the narrative opens with an invitation to the eerie Tombola Fair. The story follows the protagonist, Nancy, as she navigates a world full of secrets, fear, and unexpected discoveries. The character Skelter and his mysterious fairground introduce a maze of curiosities and horrors that provides the backdrop for Nancy’s journey. This book review for Scareground delves into these details.

Scareground hooks readers with its vivid descriptions and writing. The author’s portrayal of the fairground, especially the details of the carousel made of bones, shows her excellent writing skills. The author’s ability to conjure a sense of dread and suspense is commendable. The character development, especially for Nancy, is fantastic. It makes her a relatable and compelling heroine. Her courage and curiosity drive the story forward, and readers feel an emotional connection with her.

One of the novel’s strengths lies in its attention to detail and how the author blends historical elements with horror. The Victorian setting provides an ideal stage for the macabre, and placing the seemingly normal with the spooky enhances the story’s impact. There were times when the pacing felt off. The narrative sometimes lingers in scenes, making maintaining tension and momentum hard. Additionally, while the story is great, certain plot points may seem predictable to seasoned readers of the genre.

Nonetheless, the book’s exploration of fear and bravery is compelling. The underlying message of confronting one’s fears is subtle, which should resonate well with middle-grade readers. The author constructed a world of well-defined characters, making Scareground a must-read for fans of gothic horror and spooky mysteries.

My rating:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
