Hailed as “a must-read for our times” (Aminatta Forna) and “eye-opening, kind, and inspirational” (Adam Kay), Belly Woman tells the story of what happens to pregnant women when a humanitarian catastrophe strikes.
May, 2014. Sierra Leone is ranked the country with the highest death rate of pregnant women in the world. The same month, Ebola crosses in from neighboring Guinea. Arriving a few weeks later, Dr Benjamin Black finds himself at the center of an exponential Ebola outbreak. From impossible decisions on the maternity ward to moral dilemmas at the Ebola Treatment Center: one mistake, one error of judgment, could spell disaster.
An eye-opening work of reportage and advocacy, Belly Woman chronicles the inside journey through an unfolding global health crisis and the struggle to save the lives of young mothers. As Black reckons with the demons of the past, he must try to learn the lessons for a different, more resilient, future.
Book Review
Belly Woman: Birth, Blood & Ebola: The Untold Story by Benjamin Black is a powerful book that tells the real-life stories of people during the Ebola outbreak. Unlike many other books, it closely examines how Ebola affected pregnant women, people’s everyday lives, and the heroes who worked to save lives.
Benjamin Black’s writing style is so immersive that it transports you to the heart of the Ebola outbreak. He vividly portrays the courage of health workers, the resilience of Ebola survivors, and the heart-wrenching stories of those who succumbed. The book mainly focuses on the plight of expectant mothers, painting a stark picture of the perils they faced during the crisis.
One of the best things about this book is how it makes you think deeper about significant issues. Like how the world reacts to such crises, how we treat those suffering, and how important events can change society. Black doesn’t just tell stories; he makes us ask ourselves tough questions about support, fear, and recovery.
Even though the book covers many tough topics, it’s also about hope and strength. We read about people coming together, showing great courage, and getting through some of the darkest times you can imagine. It’s a tribute to the human spirit’s power to overcome.
In short, Belly Woman by Benjamin Black is a must-read. It doesn’t matter if you usually read about health or if you like stories of real-life heroes; this book has something for everyone. It’s moving, thought-provoking, and genuinely unforgettable. It shows the best and worst of what people can do in times of crisis. I highly recommend this book.
